Something Else

South Africa isn't like Africa at all!

And I won't fault anyone for mistaking Cape Town for any U.S. or European coastal city. The scenery is breathtaking and the weather is excellent. Cities are highly developed and highways and airways are equally impressive. Dining, and especially wines, are surprisingly affordable. Meat is generally excellently done whilst seafood is only average and lacks variety, a surprise given the long coastline of South Africa. Caucasian girls there are real beauties too probably due to their European origin. If not for the high crime rate (I saw electric fences in some homes!) South Africa could really make an excellent vacation home for many.

Maybe I haven't joined a group tour for a long time, I found out at favorite tourist spots and restaurants that I was no longer surrounded by other HK groups but Chinese ones. Many merchants also spoke simple mandarin to us obviously not knowing the difference. Small chats with the Chinese revealed that the tour had cost them $18,000 each, which wasn't cheap even in HK standard, but many travelled with their parents or kids. And on my return flight I was further bemused by those Chinese ladies at the back of the plane who were buying so enthusiastically from the duty-free shop catalogue! The serving flight attendant ended up bringing a large bag of merchandise for them to pick from! My further grown respect for our country men!

Hi there, it's a great site and while I must admit I've only started investing last year and the stocks I've picked are ultra conservative, which only brings about 10% of capital appreciation last year.

If I was to ask for your recommendation aside from the ones you've talked about in your previous articles, what do you reckon will be a good portfolio and why enter now?

pinstripe hing,

i'm sorry i can't help with your portfolio selection, and as a matter of fact i prefer not to comment on others' stockpicking as well - there's more than one route to rome. my approach is far from perfect, but it's worked for me and hasn't given me a lot of restless nights.

actually this no 'buy, hold, sell' question rule was spelled out in the DISCLAIMER & SIMPLE RULES page which link accidentally got left out during a site makeover, and because of that, i think i'm bound to say a few words.

portfolio selection is all about risk and return, which you already know, so i'll add risk is a function of company fundamentals and your knowledge of it. with enough hardwork it's possible to find higher-return-lower-risk stocks.

i think you already had a good start, as 'knowing what you don't know' is already tremendous wisdom! i remember i started out with CLP a few years back. i'm sure your stock selection will improve so long as your knowledge does. if you are too busy to invest in your knowledge then index fund is a good way, for most active funds dont' beat the index after fees. you can gradually shift to managing your own money as and when you feel more comfortable and confident. best of luck!

South Africa is a beautiful place~

Nice photo from Miller's point. That's the point from which Table Mountain has the "thinnest" view. I hope you enjoy your trip and have a safe flight from South Africa.

thanks guys, yes the place is lovely and i admire its beauty.
